City of Independence announces new Chief of Police

The City of Independence today announced that Interim Chief Adam Dustman has been selected as the next Chief of Police for the Independence Police Department. Interim Chief Dustman has served in this position since he was appointed in February 2022.  

"The selection of our next Chief of Police is one of the most important decisions a city manager makes," City Manager Zach Walker said. "I am pleased with the thorough search process that included a wide variety of stakeholders."   

Chief Dustman has served with the Independence Police Department for 14 years. He will transition to Chief of Police on Monday, Aug. 8.  

"I am honored to be given this opportunity and look forward to the future of this department,"  Chief Dustman said. "Independence is a tremendous community which has long-supported its Police. There are changes to be made and challenges to address but I am confident that we will continue to serve our City to the best of our ability." 

Chief Dustman is a graduate of Central Missouri State, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in criminal justice and was Summa Cum Laude. He will be relocating to the City of Independence with his wife, and two children.  

"Throughout the Chief of Police search process, and in wake of the Special Counsel's findings, any  concerns that have been brought to our attention are accounted for and we are working through these questions as outlined in our policies," Walker said. "I look forward to working with Chief Dustman to develop proposed recommendations and policy changes to serve Independence more efficiently and effectively."
