City of Independence offers Cooling Site August 19-22 to help the community stay cool

As we prepare for yet another heat wave, the City of Independence is opening the Roger T. Sermon Community Center as a designated Cooling Site to provide relief. The Cooling Site, located at 201 N. Dodgion, will be available: 

• Saturday, Aug. 19, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• Sunday, Aug. 20, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
• Monday, Aug. 21, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• Tuesday, Aug. 22, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Recognizing the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of our community members during hot weather, the Cooling Site offers a comfortable and air-conditioned environment for all ages to seek respite from the heat. 

"We understand that extreme heat can pose health risks, especially to vulnerable populations, and we are committed to providing a safe space for everyone to cool down," City Manager Zach Walker said. "Our Cooling Site is open to all members of the community, and we encourage residents to take advantage of this resource as needed."

Residents are encouraged to avoid strenuous outdoor activities and schedule work outdoors during the early morning or after the sun has gone down when temperatures are cooler. It is very important to remain hydrated and drink non-alcoholic beverages throughout the day. Finally, please never leave children or pets in the car, even for a few minutes.
