IPL Warns Customers of Recent Utility Scam Attempts
Scammers have updated their tactics to defraud customers, and Independence Power & Light is alerting customers to these new schemes.
Scammers visiting Independence customers’ homes, posed as Evergy representatives and said IPL is merging with Evergy. These impersonators then requested payment for a new meter.
IPL is not merging with Evergy and an IPL employee will never visit a customer’s home, or business, and ask for payment.
With the increase in scams coming through calls, texts, emails, and now door-to-door tactics, IPL is warning customers to stay vigilant. Here are some ways to identify an IPL employee or an Evergy employee.
- If someone is at your door, look to see if they are driving a vehicle with an IPL or Evergy logo.
- IPL employees will have a badge.
- Verify the person is with IPL or Evergy by asking for their badge or by calling the Customer Service Department before giving them any sensitive information (credit card, debit card, savings or checking, social security, or utility account numbers).
- If you can’t verify that you’re speaking with an IPL or Evergy employee, do NOT give them this information.
If you receive a suspicious phone call or in-person visit, contact IPL immediately at 816-325-7930. After calling IPL, report suspicious activity to the Independence Police Department.
