James Walker named New Chief of Independence Fire Department
After a vigorous nationwide search, the City of Independence found its new Fire Chief just down the street. James “Jimmy” Walker brings nearly 30 years of experience to the Independence Fire Department, most recently serving four years as the Assistant Chief for the City of Kansas City, Mo. Fire Department.
“Chief Walker was the best person for the job, without question,” said Independence City Manager Zach Walker. “He’s well-known in the metro; his decades of experience, his familiarity with our city, and his approachable demeanor make him an ideal fit. Our Independence Fire Department has a long, proud history here, and I’m happy he's chosen to join IFD to continue that legacy."
In his current role, Chief Walker is responsible for Suppression, Emergency Medical Services, Technical Rescue, Hazardous Materials, Aircraft Rescue, and managing a total budget of $225M. He is also the Department’s liaison to the Kansas City Regional Fusion Center, Secret Service, Emergency Operations Center, and the FBI. Prior leadership positions during his 28-year tenure with Kansas City include Deputy Fire Chief/Fire Marshal (2018 – 2020), Battalion Chief (2011 – 2018) and Fire Captain (2004 – 2011.) Chief Walker earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Western Governor’s University.
