Update: 291 Highway open through City of Independence
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) reopened 291 Highway through the City of Independence after temporarily closing it for inspection.
MoDOT closed MO 291 for roughly a mile, from Truman Road north to U.S. 24, beginning the evening of June 27, 2024.
MoDOT crews discovered a crack under the roadway while inspecting a recent mine collapse in the area. Out of an abundance of caution, the road was closed.
Following the inspection, MoDOT reopened 291 at 8 a.m. on June 29, 2024.
The intersection MO 291 and E. Salisbury Rd. will remain open to local access traffic. Motorists traveling on NB MO 291 will be able to exit on Truman Rd. and motorists traveling on SB MO 291 will be able to exit on U.S. 24.
The City of Independence recommends using Lee's Summit Road as an alternative route until MoDOT reopens 291.
