South Main

The South Main Neighborhood extends from Noland Road to Pleasant Street going east to west and Walnut Street south to Southside Boulevard, one block south of 23rd Street/MO 78.

History & Architecture

The South Main Neighborhood was originally made up of stately homes and large lots owned by Independence professionals and business owners. Many of these houses still remain from this early period including the Hughes Childers House, the Silver Heart Inn, also known as the Stone-Gamble House, and the Dr. John Bryant. Jr. House. Today, the neighborhood consists of tree-lined streets and a wide variety of architecture dating from the 19th century to contemporary infill. While the area obviously includes South Main Street, the neighborhood actually extends from Noland Road to Pleasant Street going east to west and Walnut south to Southside Boulevard.

In addition to its diverse architecture, the neighborhood is within easy walking distance of the Independence Square and the historic Truman Train Depot, the local Amtrak passenger train stop. Also nearby is the Bingham Waggoner Estate and the Chicago & Alton Train Depot.
