Can the City's Law Department provide me with legal advice?

The Law Department represents only the City and does not advise individuals on personal legal matters. 

Can the Law Department represent me in my lawsuit?

The City's Law Department does not represent individuals in the lawsuits they file.

Can the Law Department refer me to a lawyer?

No, but you may get a referral from the Missouri Bar Association Website or by calling (573) 636-3635

Who do I contact if I can't afford a lawyer?

You may contact Legal Aid of Western Missouri at (816) 474-6750.

How do I file a claim against the City?

If you have been damaged or injured as the result of the actions of the City, you may request to be reimbursed by the City for your loss by filing a claim. See the section Filing a Claim.

How do I find out about Independence laws?

The City of Independence laws are called ordinances and they are compiled in the City Code, which you can view here.

How do I file a complaint with the Prosecutor?

You may make an appointment by calling (816) 325-7222.

How do I find out about my Municipal Court Case?

How do I file a complaint about a business regarding goods or services that I purchased?

You may fill out a complaint form online with the Missouri Attorney General, or call the Consumer Complaint Hotline at (800) 393-8222.
